If you have a “gummy” smile or an uneven gumline, our dentist may recommend crown lengthening to improve the health and appearance of your gums. This treatment helps contour your gums to give you a more balanced smile, and may also be used to help you receive restorative treatments or other care. What is crown lengthening?
Crown lengthening is a dental procedure designed to expose more of the tooth’s surface by removing gum tissue and, in some cases, bone around the tooth. This creates a longer “crown” portion of the tooth, hence the name “crown lengthening.”
When is crown lengthening recommended?
Crown lengthening is typically recommended for two primary reasons. Firstly, it may be performed to improve the appearance of a “gummy smile,” where excessive gum tissue covers a significant portion of the teeth, making them appear short. Secondly, crown lengthening may be necessary to provide better access to a tooth’s structure for restorative procedures. This could be the case if a tooth is broken near the gum line or if there is inadequate tooth structure to support a dental crown or filling.
What happens in a crown lengthening procedure?
During a crown lengthening procedure, our dentist will first administer a local anesthetic to numb the area, ensuring the patient’s comfort throughout the process. Then, small incisions are made in the gum tissue to lift it away from the teeth and expose the underlying bone. In some cases, removal of a small amount of bone may also be necessary to achieve the desired crown lengthening effect. Once enough tooth structure is exposed, the area is thoroughly cleaned and the gum tissue is sutured back into place. You will be given post-operative care instructions to aid in the healing process. In some instances, temporary crowns or dressings might be placed until the gums fully heal.
